Executive Director, R&D Digital – R&I Therapy Area

Digital Health R&D is reimagining how we work to position AstraZeneca as an industry leader, making the development & delivery of new medicines easier. We’re doing this by harnessing the latest innovations enabled by digital, data & analytics and working with our people to craft and build the technology and working practices.

AstraZeneca’s Research & Development digital organisation develops digital solutions to support our development and commercial drug portfolios. These digital solutions encompass connected drug delivery devices, monitoring devices and sensors coupled with medical device software to:

  • Improve clinical development, through optimising data collection and improving communications between AZ, HCP and patients

  • Provide enriched data sets to support regulatory submissions, and differentiated labelling

  • Optimise real world medication use by patients and deliver digital interventions to improve clinical outcomes

  • As part of the program the team will provide digital solutions across all AZ clinical trials and develop and implement AZ’s Digital strategy. We have secured significant investment in a digital platform to enable rapid development and global deployment of tailored digital solutions for all clinical trials. This solution is built on a standardised set of modules to enable identification of patients, recruitment, ongoing engagement and retention, support to sites and collection of data directly from patients.

In close collaboration with partners within the R&I R&D TA Leadership teams, you will develop a custom digital strategy to support development of new products and ensure execution of the strategy through their team members.

You will be a key member of the Digital Leadership team in R&D, ensuring digital strategies are aligned across therapy areas to define and implement enterprise level investments.

In this role you will:

  • Work closely with key partners in the R&I TA and expert functions to build their digital strategy. This will include optimising strategies for study design/patient recruitment/data collection/analysis for the unit and develop Patient Support and Digital therapeutic strategies for the product portfolio

  • Deliver the Operational implementation plan for the R&I specific Digital Strategy and provide feedback on specific technology needs to the digital capability leads driving the digital clinical platform

  • Drive the development of an industry leading R&D Digital organization

  • Ensure effective and transparent risk, opportunity and issues management at strategic, tactical and operational levels

  • Develop and lead a team, ensuring a constructive balance between challenge and mentorship.

  • Use your networks to be able to understand and influence key aspects such as the global regulatory and competitive environments and apply learning to AZ programs, reporting performance vs the critical metrics set within the organization

  • Deliver governance approved business cases with in tolerance, on time, cost and quality working with functional management as required to resolve issues.

  • Ensure your team develops their scientific and technical knowledge in order to bring groundbreaking digital opportunities to the group and to the R&D R&I leadership team.

  • Grow and maintain internal and external collaborations in the R&I R&D unit and commercial organisation, key markets, external leaders and our patients to ensure prioritised needs are met in everything we do.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Honours Degree in scientific field, higher degree desirable

  • Shown experience in pharmaceutical industry with proven understanding of drug development processes, and experience of developing products to treat cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases

  • Ability to lead and influence strategically and persuade thoughtfully, to acquire desired outcomes while maintaining effective, positive, organisational relationships

  • Experience in Digital Health with solid understanding of Healthcare

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross functional setting with internal as well as external partners

  • Strong influencing and senior stakeholder management skills

  • Ability to challenge the status quo, take ownership and holds self and others accountable

  • Well-developed communication skills, able to build clarity from ambiguity

  • Line management experience, with evidence of staff development

  • Proven delivery track record

  • Transformational Leadership of functional and cross functional team

  • Persuasive verbal and written communication skills

  • Passion for Customers, representing the needs of multiple customers in decision making.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advance degree with strong scientific and medical understanding of the R&I Therapy Area

  • Device, software development and / or clinical project management

  • Comprehensive understanding of dynamics affecting the pharmaceutical industry and needs for transformation

  • Ability to work globally including international travel

  • Well-developed Project management skills, including managing vendors, budgets, timelines and risks
