Are you ready to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives? We are looking for a dynamic leader to head our Discovery Sciences global protein science, structural biology and biophysics capability. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our dedicated Research & Development team in the Biopharmaceuticals R&D business area.


As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for collaborating with therapy area leadership teams and drug discovery project teams across AstraZeneca to build screening strategies for drug discovery. You will lead a department of over 85 scientific experts in Cambridge and Gothenburg, accountable for Discovery Sciences Molecular Biology capability, Protein expression and purification, Biophysics, and Structural Biology. You will also be responsible for the development of a science and technology improvement vision for the department, establishing and leading external collaborations, driving innovation, scientific excellence and external visibility of the capability.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • PhD/Post-doc in Chemistry / Biology / Pharmacology subject area with extensive experience in a drug discovery environment
  • Track record of leading large groups in highly matrixed science and technology based organisations
  • A proven scientific track record of innovation and delivery within the field of small molecule drug discovery
  • Proven ability to create new research strategies to drive organisational success
  • Significant experience in the leadership of drug discovery projects
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain customer relationships with scientific and leadership teams at local and remote research sites
  • Experience in project management, change management and/or implementation of process optimization approaches
  • Proven ability to recruit, retain and develop people to build a world-class organisation
  • Broad industrial and academic network with key collaborators and innovation leaders internationally
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Extensive Drug Discovery project experience

Desirable skills/ experience

  • Extensive knowledge of AstraZeneca business objectives that are related to R&D.
  • Experience in Oncology, CVRM and/or R&I drug discovery
