The Position

This is an opportunity for a talented scientist with expertise in Computational Biology, to play an influential role in drug discovery projects at AstraZeneca in Cambridge UK. The Computational Structural Biology (CSB) team has expertise in Structural Bioinformatics, Protein Modelling, protein docking, and in silico prediction of physico-chemical properties of biomolecules. The team is part of the Structure, Biophysics and Fragment Based Lead Generation (SBF) department, that has a leading capability in Crystallography, Cryo-Electron Microscopy, Biophysics, Medicinal and Computational Chemistry. You will collaborate with structural biologists, protein scientists, biophysicists, chemists and biologists across all of AZ’s therapy areas. You will work proactively across multiple projects within an interdisciplinary, collaborative, dynamic environment to help develop high-quality lead molecules, ultimately leading to new clinical candidate drugs.

You will be part of a team that applies and develops computational methods and platforms to analyse and interpret protein and nucleic acids structures and interactions. You will contribute to evolve the CSB team to support AZ’s growing capabilities in RNA therapeutics and to advance computational biology capabilities to positively impact drug discovery projects.

What You Will Do

  • Analyse and interpret protein structure using computational modelling tools; homology modelling and protein-protein docking.
  • Apply molecular dynamics simulations to understand protein dynamics and motions.
  • Generate scripts and workflows to enable automated protein-protein interaction analysis.
  • Establish computational approaches to nucleic acids, in particular anti-sense oligonucleotides, siRNA and RNA as target.
  • Apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to biologics drug discovery.
  • Be part of and contribute to multidisciplinary drug discovery project teams.

Candidate Criteria

You will have a PhD in Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Computational Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related field and strong practical and theoretical expertise in protein structure and Bioinformatics. You will be skilled in computer programming and have some knowledge of machine learning algorithms.

You will have strong personal drive, result focus and a passion to push the boundaries of science to achieve outstanding results. You have excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. You will have proven ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Computational Sciences or a related subject area.
  • Proven strong practical and theoretical knowledge of protein structure, protein bioinformatics and prediction of physico-chemical properties of proteins, in particular antibodies.
  • Skills in computer programming (e.g. Python). Skills in machine learning algorithms will be an advantage.
  • Experience in computational approaches to nucleic acids, in particular anti-sense oligonucleotides, siRNA and RNA as target is highly desired and will be an advantage.
  • Experience of working in a drug discovery environment is highly valued.
  • Good track record of publications in the field.
  • Relevant post-doctoral experience is highly desired and will be an advantage.
  • Excellent collaboration and verbal and written communication skills.

Discovery Sciences

Discovery Sciences applies deep technical expertise in specialist technologies to support the delivery of targets and molecules to the early AstraZeneca pipeline. Targets are identified through our human genomics and functional genomics efforts, employing the latest technologies in genome editing and sophisticated cell model development. Once identified and validated, we work with therapy area project teams to identify novel small molecules effectors of these targets using our coordinated sample management and platform screening groups.
