Location: Barcelona (On-site) 3 days working from the office and 2 days working from home.

The Director, Portfolio and Capacity Management (TA Lead) provides business leadership and capacity management expertise to BioPharma Clinical Operations maximizing delivery for their respective TA across the Early and Late portfolio.   The Director Portfolio and Capacity Management is involved in BioPharma Clinical Operations strategic initiatives and implementation of delivery and capability model(s) in alignment with broader AZ and BioPharma vision.

This role delivers value to BP Clinical Operations by;

  • Actively managing the Onc or BioPharma portfolio of work and global BP Clinical Operations capacity to secure efficient and timely delivery according to business and clinical development priorities, including sourcing of new activities.
  • Close collaboration with their TA counterpart, escalation of resource gaps/issues and identification of cross BP Clinical Ops solutions where applicable. 

Typical Accountabilities:

As the Director, Portfolio and Capacity Management (TA Lead) for BP Clinical Operations:

  • Serve as the Portfolio & Capacity Management TA Lead – (BioPharma or ONC)
  • Active management of the BP ClinOps function’s TA portfolio (early/late) and global BP ClinOps capacity to ensure effective delivery.
  • Escalate resource issues/gaps for their respective TA and enable cross ClinOps options/solutions
  • Liaise with TA project leaders to ensure BP ClinOps capacity assessments are performed in advance of governance
  • Core member of the BP ClinOps Capacity Management Team (COCMT) to ensure active management of the allocation of capacity to their respective TA portfolio of work and focussed and effective capacity issue-management including identification of options and impacts, decision-making at the appropriate level and escalation if required.
  • Support strategic functional and/or cross functional initiatives as required
  • Work with BP ClinOps departments to develop and continuously improve demand algorithms
  • Work with BP ClinOps departments to maintain systems and tools, to ensure accurate data reporting and associated visualizations for area
  • Support BP ClinOps resource submissions for RBU and MTP submissions by working closely with Head Portfolio & Capacity Management as required
  • Work with the Head Portfolio & Capacity Management to contribute to the operational, tactical and strategic management of BP ClinOps capacity

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • University degree at Bachelor level, in a scientific or business discipline
  • Significant years of project/portfolio/resource management, 10 years and global project leadership experience in a Clinical Development environment.
  • Broad drug development experience in a matrix environment, 10 years (ideally covering both project and line roles)
  • Minimum 5 years of working experience and understanding of business planning and capacity management process.
  • Proven ability with enterprise project management systems and production of visualizations
  • Expert knowledge of spreadsheets and internal tools used for oversight and management of capacity management, demand and supply

Skills and Competencies

  • An effective team member and team leader, locally and internationally
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, influencing and relationship-building skills within and across R&D functions.
  • Ability to work effectively and proactively across the spectrum of tactical and operational aspects of clinical capacity management in the long and short term.
  • Ability to work effectively, demonstrate sensitivity and communicate appropriately across a range of cultures.
  • Ability to assimilate complex information and identify key issues and messages
  • Attention to details and ability to formulate predictive analysis based on data available
  • Demonstrates a proficiency working with computerized systems, including data capture and integrated reporting methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to interrogate, understand and apply project management data for scenario planning and modelling
  • Strategic mindset and thinking
