What You'll Do

The Sr. Director is responsible for leading and overseeing the Medical Information Operations and Established brands team to drive effective and efficient operations for MI content development and delivery. The Sr. Director is a senior strategic member of the MI Leadership Team (MILT) and is responsible for ensuring the MI Operational processes, platforms, best-practices, etc. are aligned and optimized across the Biopharmaceuticals (BPM) and the Oncology (OBU) Medical Information teams. The Sr. Director is responsible for leading the MI to market engagement and communications plan.  The Sr. Director is also accountable for the planning, prioritization, and execution of Medical Information-related deliverables for the Established Brands across the Biopharma Medical organization, including developing scientific content aligned with Medical strategy, HCP engagement such as answering medical inquiries, and reviewing/providing scientific consult to US promotional materials. This role is accountable for delivering approved global scientific content that is accessible to Regions/local Marketing Companies (MCs).  This role is accountable for the leadership and management of a team of Established Brands Medical Information Leads and external resource partners (OSP/vendor). The Sr. Director will report to the Head of Medical Information - Biopharmaceutical Medical.

Established Brands:  The Sr. Director is accountable for leadership, training and direction of a MI team, including strategy, routine management and coaching of team members, best practice sharing, planning and alignment of priorities.  Accountable to deliver high quality Global and US medical information deliverables by the team, including the following core deliverables (LTO):  Medical content development, standard responses, medical Q&As, and responding to medical information requests (US) and escalated inquiries from other local markets, US Payor content and requests, and US Promotional review, scientific messaging consultation.  The Sr. Director will also participate as a strategic partner with the International & US Established Brands teams and Medical colleagues to ensure identification of opportunities and drive appropriate integration of Medical Information staff.

Content Strategy, Platforms and Processes: The Sr. Director is responsible for developing capabilities and enhancements for MI medical content that increases consistency and leverages content reuse across the BPM and OBU.  The Sr. Director will lead the oversight, implementation, and compliance of the medical information processes; ensure standards and consistency in medical information activities; and develop and operationalize SOPs for streamlined execution. The Sr. Director will work in close alignment with the Sr. Franchise Leads to ensure that core asset creation is consistently executed across the MI team. The Sr. Director is the system owner for the Global Medical Information Platform (GMIP) and is responsible for optimizing the direction of how GMIP (and any future platforms) should be utilized and is responsible for driving continuous improvement in collaboration with Medical Excellence platforms team and the prioritized markets.

Team Budget & Resource Management: The Sr. Director will be responsible for managing and overseeing the MI budget and resources (both internal and external). The Sr. Director will identify operational needs and consult on resource allocation to support MI priorities and execution.  The Sr. Director will forge alliances with the Operations, Planning and Execution functional team.

Governance & Innovation: The Sr. Director will work in close partnership with the Head Medical Information BPM on critical governance and priority tactics across Medical Information.  The Sr. Director, in support of the Head-MI BPM (who is the team chair), will help to ensure the MI Governance Team is laser focused on setting company standards and operational strategies for MI while also providing oversight to enhancements and changes effecting GMIP. The Sr. Director will serve as the MI SME/Business lead on the AZ Alliance and Integration Management Team as well as other global initiatives that impact medical information.

The Sr. Director will work closely with the Head, MI BPM to embed and adopt a digital and strategic mindset within the medical information community. The Sr. Director will drive the enhancement of digital transformation by supporting implementation of projects related to medical information and content development and delivery. The Sr. Director will explore digital tools that can improve the way we work and simplification within the Medical Information function. The Sr. Director will forge alliances with the new Head of Innovation.

Engagement/Communications Strategy: The Sr. Director will be responsible for developing a comprehensive engagement plan and internal communications strategy. The engagement plan should align team members to the multiple stakeholders across the BPM medical team and prioritized markets as well as the OBU MI team. The Sr. Director will coordinate key partnerships within BPM as well as across the organization including commercial functions (e.g., Global Business Services, Global Commercial Digital & Innovation) to leverage best practices for content development and delivery.

Insights, Analytics & MI Functional Training: The Sr. Director is responsible for aligning closely with the BPM Insight & Analytics team for a broad view of insights across all channels. The Sr. Director will collaborate with the Medical Excellence reporting and analytics team to ensure identification and analysis of insights are available to the MI team. The Sr. Director will forge alliances with the Medical Excellence Analytics team.

The Sr. Director will be responsible for leading the assessment of the performance Analytics, KPI’s and Dashboard of the MI team including creating ways of measuring the quality and value of all MI deliverables.

The Sr. Director is responsible for working with the Sr. Franchise Leads to identify MI functional skills & capability training needs as well as serve as the link to the Medical Excellence Training team to ensure the appropriate support is provided across the Franchises.   

Essential for the Role

  • Doctoral level degree in scientific discipline or applicable health sciences field (eg, PharmD, PhD, MD)
  • Demonstrated Leadership experience in a team-based organization (>5 years)
  • 10 years of Medical information experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in the review of promotional materials
  • Demonstrated experience in drug information and knowledge of applicable regulations
  • Demonstrated experience in process-oriented function in pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience in developing new services and programs
  • Demonstrated project management experience with a proven record of driving impact
  • Global experience desired
  • Experience in creating and implementing training programs

Skills and Capabilities

  • An ability to think strategically and understand needs from MCs for medical content in a Global Medical Information system
  • Ability to manage a group with a diverse set of responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities, resources, performance targets and project initiatives in a global and regional environment; strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of medical information technology systems and an ability to identify the most efficient and effective way to implement new services
  • Facilitation, presentation and interpersonal communication skills in a variety of formats (such as seminars, workshops, web-based training or podcasts)
  • Strong operational and process ownership skills
  • An understanding of the global guidance for provision of medical services
  • Knowledge of the IS/IT needs for global development and implementation
  • Scientific/Medical knowledge and technical skills in medical information provision
  • Strong ability to effectively collaborate with various roles within the organization; Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal skills, conflict management
