Responsible for providing Leadership of FAIR Data Services across R&D globally; developing strategic plans for FAIR Data Services that supports the overall multi-functional strategy and business agenda.

Provides operational leadership in order to use data and AI with confidence to maximise value, while safeguarding legal, ethical, privacy and security aspects.

The role is responsible for the business leadership of the multi-functional process and operating model for R&D Data Foundation and delivery, in line with customer needs and company policy, including a range of data services for FAIR; Operational Data Governance and Data Stewardship of R&D Data Foundation, Curation, Metadata, Master and Reference Data Management.

The role is expected to make a strong contribution to the global function strategy and Data and AI strategic impact across R&D.

Typical Accountabilities

Responsible for the development and implementation of global, multi-functional strategic plans for FAIR Data Services for R&D, in concert with R&D and IT partners.

  • Anticipates future requirements and ensures appropriate processes are in place to deal with changing external landscape or business direction. Demonstrates a clear understanding of business strategy across R&D functions, coupled with ability to tailor FAIR Data Services to maximise value, while safeguarding legal, ethical, privacy and security aspects.

  • Develops and maintains effective and supportive relationships across R&D to understand business plans and implications and so lead, and where appropriate mitigate, business risk.

  • Develop strategic and operational plans with internal and external partners and vendors to ensure business needs are met, and Data & Information Governance Standards are met, to ensure value and trust in our data.

Provides operational multi-functional leadership across R&D globally for FAIR Data Services, in order to demonstrate data and AI with confidence to maximise value, while safeguarding legal, ethical, privacy and security aspects.

  • Operational Data Governance and Stewardship of R&D Data Foundation.

  • Data Cataloguing, Stewardship and Curation of metadata and data for R&D Data Foundation

  • Metadata Management for R&D, in concert with Enterprise and IT partners.

  • Master Data Management for R&D, in concert with Enterprise and IT partners.

  • Reference Data Management for R&D, in concert with Enterprise and IT partners.

  • Develop, own, and continuously improve, clear R&D-wide processes to make data FAIR for AI/Analytics and Digital, so that data value grows over time. Secure value measurability, and scalability for changes in scope and demand.

Overseesand advises the development and execution of the relevant strategy in own function against the overall global multi-functional strategy.

  • Set the annual operating budget in line with the agreed strategy and direct the effective and timely delivery of committed outcomes within the approved budget levels.

  • Instils a strong customer service and culture of opportunities in own area with a focus on continuous improvement; internalising external insights into AZ strategy.

  • Leads all aspects of the implementation of operational leadership decisions in own function(s) in order for the business to achieve its objectives

  • Bachelors Degree level in a relevant subject area or equivalent years of experience

  • Extensive in-depth knowledge and experience across multiple FAIR Data Service specialist areas

  • Demonstrable experience of designing and implementing strategy for FAIR data capabilities and services, in a sophisticated supervised multi-national environment

  • Shown leadership experience of multi-layered teams in a global environment

  • Influencing and collaboration skills of the highest order

  • Capability in values-based leadership

  • Significant budget and project management experience

  • Awareness of data and technology trends


  • Master’s Degree in relevant quantitative subject area

  • Specific pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Experience of pharma and the life sciences

  • Experience of achieving tangible and acknowledged value in a similar position and scale of challenge and opportunity.

  • Track record of significant strategic data project delivery with demonstration of clear scientific and/or operational value

  • Strong Organisational Change track record.

  • Experience from hands-on Agile, preferably in a business context.
