Mission & Objective Description
Medical Biopharmaceuticals ensures the best patient outcomes by providing healthcare decision-makers around the world with the evidence and confidence they need on AstraZeneca (AZ) therapies and supports our internal stakeholders with medical insight and expertise. Medical Biopharmaceuticals provides medical leadership with market participation and connectivity while also impacting the life cycle planning and execution of all our products. - Track record of building and maintaining a deep and continued connection to Medical Practice/healthcare delivery; a good understanding of the global primary care environment is a bonus for this role.
- Collaborative/matrix management skills with a focus on interacting with diverse groups (e.g., cultural, geographical, functional) to achieve excellent results in shared goals
- Well-developed communication and influencing skills with the ability to prioritise and distil complexity down to what matters to our internal and external stakeholders

Reporting directly to the Head, the Medical Affairs Lead will be charged with delivering ambitious medical plans and projects and the anti-inflammatory reliever strategy, and also with delivering novel and essential confidence and evidence initiatives. The Medical Affairs Lead will represent the global Medical Affairs team on the Global Medical Team (GMT) and execute the medical strategy globally through membership of the same GMT. Bi-directional communication is a must to execute successfully. The GMT is comprised of Medical Directors from the priority markets and relevant Global Medical Affairs functions.
The role entails leveraging high impact clinical evidence and medical materials as well as demonstrate world-class scientific engagement with external experts and other key customers. The Medical Affairs Lead requires strong technical, scientific and medical knowledge to drive understanding of the medical strategy across the organization, to lead all external medical activities for the brand (including but not limited to ad boards and symposia) to advance clinical practice with the benefit of the patient as end goal. The Medical Affairs Lead needs to be able to design and execute randomized and real world clinical trials.
Manages, executes and streamlines the implementation of the Medical Biopharmaceuticals product strategy globally and regionally (iMAP), ensuring alignment of publication and medical evidence plans between Regions/markets, ensuring input from and output to the GMT.
Pro-active member of the Global Medical Team (GMT) to ensure that global strategy is effectively communicated and executed at regional and country levels and that regional/country needs are appropriately accommodated in global deliverables.
The Medical Affairs Lead drives customer insights and market needs from all countries and feeds back to the Head for input into the Global Product Team for review. Strong cross functional collaboration across all GMA functions (e.g. Global Medical Excellence, Medical Information, Publication and Medical Evidence) and the Global TA Team (commercial, R&D, regulatory, biostatistics etc)
Support and input to medical advocacy plan that drives successful launch of innovative and differentiated new medicines within the TA and of novel strategies for existing brands.
Responsible for the co-ordination of select Medical Affairs activities including Science Advisory board, the Science Story, etc., …
Accountable for engaging and cultivating relationships with leading global KEEs.
Represents AZ at scientific and medical forums, including medical education forums, scientific roundtables, congresses, and symposia
Responsible for leading the initial development and ensuring the accuracy of medical promotional materials and communications prior to submission to GMQA (Global Medical Quality Assurance) for the final approval.
Closely follows medical developments within Therapeutic area and disseminates new information to transform clinical trends and incorporates new and emerging data into new plans
Follows up, reviews and prioritises the current literature in the field of asthma, including general publications, as well as Astra Zeneca and competitor papers and abstracts.
Manages other specific respiratory/medical projects as required

Ensures effective management of allocated budget for defined activities within the assigned target
Minimum Requirements – Education and Experience
Good level of expertise in the relevant or related TA required (respiratory preferred)
Experienced in an above market Medical Affairs environment and working cross-functionally across a large product team, with proven influencing skills at all levels
Highly desired: Experience launching new products (within Respiratory TA preferred)
Experience of healthcare systems in US, China, EU and other International markets
Strong demonstration of strategic and medical leadership prowess at therapeutic area and/or senior leader meetings
Demonstrated track record in delivering new initiatives, capabilities and leading large scale impactful medical initiatives desired
Demonstrated success in building and executing multi-year strategic projects highly desired
Ensure that country and regional medical TA leads deliver key medical objectives, by establishing strong working relationships
Ability to manage an internal network of stakeholders, and provide medical guidance
Strong track record in partnering with KEEs, professional societies and other pharmaceutical companies
Skills and Capabilities
Proven ability to create bespoke strategy and mobilise an organization to execute
Ability to design and execute randomized and real-world clinical trials
Creativity and aptitude to design disruptive ‘change programmes’ that advance clinical practice
Strong ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, excellent team player within the global respiratory asthma inhaled team.
Experience of presenting to senior leadership; persuasive oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver executive presentations
Proven ability to collaborate with internal and external colleagues in various geographies, cultures, roles, and hierarchic levels – enterprise leadership mindset
Understanding of the complex and evolving Medical Affairs space with insights about trends, opportunities, risks, and an understanding of external stakeholders (payers, patients, physicians), forward looking and ability to incorporate constant change
Ability to manage overall business and medical priorities while also being able to actively engage in more detailed execution discussions
Ability to fluidly flex between high level strategy and detailed tactics as required
Strong analytical mind-set and ability to quickly assess large amounts of information and distil into key messages and actions
Integrity and high ethical standards; enterprise thinking with the patient in mind
